Belated Pandemic Update Jan 2022: I've been well and busy. Outdoor tennis has been very safe. AND I'VE BEEN FLEXIBLE... planning has been usually month-to-month. I currently maintain a number of text groups for classes at different times and for different skills and ages. Please call or send a message to learn current options.
508.641.4706
And I set up "Little Free Tennis Libraries" at local courts to provide racquets and extra balls to those who don't have their own.
Read below for sample of options during my last "normal" season. And find other local self-"serve" resources and activities. There's a local players list you can join to connect with others. And some league and junior team tennis, and other resources.
As of Jan 2022 - we have some classes at Jesup Blair Park (south end off Blair Rd. 2 courts, one wall, timer light on about 445pm-10/11pm - 60min timer located outside by larger basketball court, and can countdown quickly.) And other Takoma area courts. Hope to get back to Takoma Park Middle School soon. renovations are mostly done... but courts need nets and paint. (approx 3 and a half courts).
You can use my registration form if you would like to get on a future email list... though I haven't used my email list much in 2020/2021. Sign up here: https://forms.gle/d29ypcxm7dGZZhZM7
NEW as of SPRING 2019 -- Most of the registrations are directly via this website and Coach SJ.
(except for Senior tennis with TP Rec Dept and TPMS club tennis via TPMS office.)
Register with SJ: See google form here for Fall Signup: https://forms.gle/d29ypcxm7dGZZhZM7
Also NEW 2019: Sliding Scale and Scholarship payment options. See below for details.
Latest Info/Current Classes email: August 2019
Last new thing: I'm going to encourage folks to do 2+ tennis sessions per week to see much greater learning progressions. This doesn't have to be two classes with me. Class time is ideally supplemented by practice at home (yard, driveway, local park, or quiet street/parking lot) and additional time on court or with a hitting wall. Either on your own, casually with friends/family, semi-formal match play or additional classes each week. I'll followup with those who are registered, and also look into some facilitated super local "league" or competitive play program (likely on Saturdays).
Takoma Park Rec Dept registration typically follows this schedule: (and a week later for non-residents)
Spring/Summer: begins March 15
Fall: begins August 15
Winter: begins December 15

-Little Free Tennis Libraries - inspired by a friend in the midwest, I'm starting to distribute "Little Free Tennis Libraries" (a bin with instructions, balls, racquets) to be placed at local tennis courts so anyone visiting can start playing. Keep an eye out for them. Let me know if you need any racquet stringing/service or purchase needs, including slower/softer training balls - I have lots of quality used racquets, some new youth ones, and inexpensive/free old ones just to get the whole family playing. I can also provide (free?) buckets of used balls for serve or other practice you want to do.
about Moving Forward Tennis
- Coach SJ (Sat Jiwan) is a gentle, attentive, and adaptive tennis teacher, meeting students where they are at. He brings a “Montessori” approach to coaching, challenging students to “move forward” and progress at their own rate; combining instruction for technique, fitness and the mental game… and FUN! At all levels, some specialized training equipment will be used: Visual targets, bigger/softer/slower balls and smaller nets/racquets, footwork ladder, ball machine, and 10-and-under/quick start tennis concepts. Coach SJ brings over 16 years of competitive tennis playing, over 7+ years tennis teaching experience, along with basketball coaching, camp counselor and parenting experience.
